Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
