    [ English ]

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
