Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win.
