Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
