Be brilliant, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
