Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
