• Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Schemes: The Background of Craps

    [ English ]

Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
