• Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Strategies: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
