Be smart, play smart, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
