Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
