• Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be smart, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
