• Become Versed in Craps – Pointers and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
