Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
