Be cunning, play cunning, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
