• Pickup Craps – Tricks and Techniques: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
