Be smart, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
