Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
