Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
