Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
