Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
